I have Brangus heifers purchased from 4S ranch (breeder Glenn Stallones).
These are a cross between Brahman and Angus cattle. The reason I chose this
breed is because Brahman cattle have good heat tolerance, and that is good
because it can get very hot in Texas. The Angus cattle are very fertile, which
means they can have lots of calves. They are also good milk producers which is
good for them to feed their babies.
My heifers live at 4S Ranch, which is my grandpa’s house. I am able to ride
through the pasture to check to make sure they have feed, hay, and clean water.
My pens have a bulk feeder, a water trough, a hay ring, and a shed for shelter
from bad weather and the sun.
This is my first year to have a fair project. I have enjoyed learning new
things about cattle. For example, I have learned about how to select a good bull
for my heifers. The bull should have low birth weight so that the calf will be
smaller and the heifer can have the baby easier. The bull should also have a high
weaning weight so that when the calf is weaned and ready to go to the sale, it will
be heavier and we make more money because we sell by the pound. I have also
learned the benefits of raising Brangus heifers. I spent lots of time practicing for
the interview part of my project. I know that these skills will help me be a better
communicator in the future.
