2014 CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Kevin and Vera Schultz own and operate Sandhill Farms in Haviland, Kanas, USA.  Kevin incorporated EPD’s into his Hereford operation and now is utilizing GE-EPDs in his herd. Kevin will be speaking to the use of GE-EPDs as a breeding and marketing tool in their herd following the CHA Annual Meeting in Lindsay.  You can listen to him in person or you will be able to watch online with Cattle in Motion.

Kevin Schultz graduated from Kansas State University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. While at Kansas State he was a member of both the Meats Judging Team and the Livestock Judging Team. After  graduating from Kansas State he married Vera and they joined his family to become the 6th generation on the family-owned and operated farm and  ranch located in south central Kansas.  Kevin added the Polled Hereford seed stock business, now called Sandhill Farms, to what had been a purebred commercial  hereford operation. The farm consists of both grain and livestock. Kevin and Vera have three children Brooke, Tyler, and Courtney. All three have attended K-State with Tyler graduating this past May and starting the 7th generation at the ranch. Sandhill Farms won the Beef Improvement Federation “Seedstock Breeder of the Year” award in 2010.  They have exhibited pen bulls at the Denver stock show for the past 18 year, and have been awarded Grand or Reserve Champion Pen 7 out of the last 9 years.

The grain operation consists of both dry land and irrigated crops, which include corn, wheat, and soybeans.

The goal of the livestock breeding program is to provide genetics that are balanced for calving ease, growth, and carcass merit. The cowherd consists of 300 registered polled Hereford brood cows , and 150 purebred commercial. They have ultrasounded the entire calf crop for Rib Eye Area, Marbling and Back Fat, since 1994. Most of the registered cows are sycronized and bred AI, and the commercial cows and lower end registered cows are used as recipients for the embryo transfer program.

After selling bulls private treaty for years, Sandhill Farms started hosting a production sale the first Friday in April starting in 2008. Currently, they are selling 100 bulls per year, with 20% going to purebred operations and 80% going to commercial breeders. They sell all the 5 year old registered cows with heifer calves at side in the sale each spring. 90% of these have gone on to be donors.
